Guantanamo kept open for 'humane reasons' | Press Esc: "United States President George W. Bush is keeping Guantanamo open until he figures out a way to ensure that the detainees are treated humanely once they are repatriated, a White House spokeswoman told the reporters yesterday."
So, after years of torture and imprisonment, Bush has decided he cannot close Gitmo until he gets assurances that they will be treated humanely in their home countries? What kind of doublespeak is this? What an arrogant moron.

Guantanamo meeting canceled after report closure is near - CNN.com
Guantanamo meeting canceled after report closure is near - CNN.com: "A White House meeting planned for Friday about the future of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility has been canceled after The Associated Press reported the Bush administration was 'nearing a decision' to close the center.
National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said there would be no meeting Friday, but he would not comment on the reasons for the cancellation
Earlier Thursday, AP reported that officials were close to a decision to shut down the facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and that the administration had scheduled a meeting to discuss a proposal to transfer the detainees to other military prisons.
Officials from the White House, the Pentagon and the Justice and State departments denied the AP report."
Well this is interesting... I wonder why it was canceled...

Decision near to close Guantanamo - Yahoo! News
Decision near to close Guantanamo - Yahoo! News: "The advisers will consider a new proposal to shut the center and transfer detainees to one or more Defense Department facilities, including the maximum security military prison at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, where they could face trial, said the officials. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing internal deliberations."
Hiding these people in other prisons will not change the illegality of their unchallengeable detentions. Perhaps they will render most of them out of the country to hide the humanitarian abuses from onlookers.

Truthdig - Ear to the Ground - Colin Powell: Close Guantanamo Immediately
Truthdig - Ear to the Ground - Colin Powell: Close Guantanamo Immediately: "Colin Powell has come out against Guantanamo Bay: 'Guantanamo has become a major, major problem ... in the way the world perceives America and if it were up to me I would close Guantanamo, not tomorrow but this afternoon.' The former secretary of state has been eager to rehabilitate his image in recent years after a disastrous WMD sales pitch at the U.N."
Another defection from a former Bush associate. Of course, his opinion will do nothing to change the "decider's" stance.
